Many companies would have you believe that California auto insurance is just a commodity - it isn’t.
Finding out the importance of having adequate limits is not something you want to learn after having an accident. All of us want to save money where we can, but cutting corners with your insurance coverage may cost you a lot more if you have an accident and are being sued by the other party.
The good news is that there is many ways to keep costs down. Many factors such as your driving record, type of vehicle, how you use your vehicle can provide you discounts. Additionally many insurance companies provide discounts for insuring your home or apartment. Since we are local agents we can proactively seek out the discounts and know where to find the lowest rates for your car insurance. Our goal is to make sure have the best coverage tailored to your personal needs at the lowest premium.
An Important consideration is understanding the different coverage limits and making sure that you are adequately covered but not paying for car insurance coverage you don't need. There are several coverages and limits that make up your auto policy:
- Bodily Injury Liability: Pays when you are at fault in an accident. Amount of coverage start a minimum of $15,000 per person and can go as high $500,000 per person. When this coverage is exhausted you are financially responsible to pay anything over the limit. This coverage is required for car insurance in the State of California.
- Property Damage Liability: Pays for the damage that your vehicle causes to another person’s property. That may be the other car after an accident, it can also include houses, garages, and anything else that counts as property.
- Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist: Pays you and your family for injuries if you are struck by an uninsured driver. It will also pay when a drivers insurance does not have enough insurance.
- Medical Payments: This optional coverage pays you for your injuries after a car accident, regardless of fault. This coverage is usually $1,000 - $25,000designed to help you pay for things like Co-Pays and Deductibles or provide basic medical care while your claim is being settled.
- Collision: Covers damage done to your vehicle when it collides with another vehicle or object. You choose your deductible (how much you pay before the insurance company picks up the balance). Typically the higher deductible the lower your car insurance premiums.
- Comprehensive: Covers damage to your vehicle resulting from something other than a collision. Examples for this would be hitting an animal, craked or broken windshields, theft or flood. Again the higher your deductible the lower your auto insurance premiums.
